Throughout his whole football career, at all levels, Barrett has been a jack of all trades. He was a dual-threat quarterback in high school. He has been a “offensive weapon” for Michigan, appearing in games as a running back, wide receiver, H-back, return man, Viper, and, of course, the more conventional linebacker that he is now.
At 6-0 and 233 pounds, Barrett is a bit of a “tweener,” not quite the right size for a true linebacker and not quite the right speed and fluidity for a true safety. However, he’s a fantastic defensive tool in the modern football world. In addition to being large and strong enough to stop running backs and tight ends, he is also agile enough to play in space against the same offensive players. I have no idea exactly what his NFL future holds, which may be the reason he’s returning to Michigan for his sixth season. Whatever his reasoning for making this choice, head coach Jim Harbaugh’s desire for Barrett’s return was evident following the Ohio State game. At the post-game podium, he stated as much
The Michigan Wolverines are ‘overjoyed’ to have Jim Harbaugh back. The Michigan players are excited for head coach Jim Harbaugh to rejoin the sidelines for the Big Ten championship game against Iowa on Saturday night.
Harbaugh has finished the three games that the Big Ten suspended Michigan for for engaging in an illegal off-campus scouting and signal-stealing scheme run by former staff member Connor Stalions. Harbaugh last coached the Wolverines on November 4 against Purdue. The coach could only be suspended on game days.
Senior running back Blake Corum expressed her excitement at having quarterback Colin Kaepernick back on Monday. It will be fantastic. It will resemble a reunion.”
Pregame remarks by Harbaugh, which “gets the hair sticking up on my arms, gets me ready to run through a wall,” were mentioned by Corum. Before each of the last three games on Friday nights, Harbaugh spoke to the Michigan players. After Michigan’s victory over No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday, the players noticed that Harbaugh had cited Hall of Fame coach and former Michigan coach Bo Schembechler, who is renowned for saying, “The team, the team, the team.”

However, Harbaugh hasn’t been spending much time with his team lately on game days. Joey McCarthy, the quarterback, stated on Monday that he hadn’t seen Harbaugh since prior to the Ohio State game.
McCarthy and Corum agreed that one important element they have overlooked is Harbaugh’s presence on game days.
“You never know what’s going to come out of that man’s mouth,” said McCarthy. “Everything that happens always happens at the appropriate moment with the appropriate words. Having him in the pregame locker room, where he kind of goes around to everyone and kind of pumps them up, like, ‘Go kill them, champ, go out there and do you,’ just little things like that, takes a big, profound effect.”
Corum refrained from stating that a third consecutive Big Ten championship—the first in the team’s history—would be the ultimate goal, given Michigan’s focus on winning a national championship. However, winning a championship would be significant, particularly in light of the attention Michigan has been under since the scandal involving the signal-stealing last month.
“We’ve been through a lot, we’ve been called all types of names, people don’t think we’re good at football because of this and that and just so much going on,” Corum stated. “[Harbaugh] receives a three-game suspension, and Chris Partridge, our linebackers coach, is fired. There are so many things thrown at you. How did we proceed? We straightened up and grew closer. We already seemed close to one another, so I didn’t think we could get even closer.”
McCarthy reported that his lower-leg injury is “almost perfectly healed” and expressed gratitude to the athletic training staff at Michigan for their assistance during his recuperation. Nov. 18 at Maryland, when he completed just 12 of 23 passes with an interception, appeared to be the junior’s most limited performance; however, he responded admirably in Ohio State’s victory.
