Just in:Washington Huskies sign another key player from…
With Will Rogers expected to join the Huskies, Washington adds another quarterback.
Another quarterback, possibly Michael Penix Jr., the Heisman Trophy runner-up, has joined Washington.
Will Rogers, a former quarterback for Mississippi State, is on his way to Seattle and could be a starter for the Huskies in the upcoming campaign.During a visit to the campus on Friday, Rogers told ESPN that he had pledged to the Washington staff.
Rogers, who threw for 12,315 yards during his four seasons with the Bulldogs, is the second-best passer in SEC history. Under former head coach Mike Leach’s pass-first offense scheme, Rogers flourished, throwing for 3,974 yards and 35 touchdowns in 2022 and 4,739 yards and 36 touchdowns in 2021.
Rogers played in just eight games last season as his numbers declined. Despite having 12 touchdown passes this season, Rogers only completed 60% of his passes.
Given his background and experience, Rogers seems certain to start. As a result of current Washington backup Dylan Morris adding his name to the transfer portal, Austin Mack, a first-year quarterback, becomes available to the Huskies for the upcoming campaign.
QB Sirmon will transfer, and the Washington Huskies sign all 15 commits in the 2021 class for early signing day.
On Friday, the Washington Huskies won’t be getting ready for a Pac-12 Championship. On Wednesday, however, head coach Jimmy Lake and his team worked diligently to ensure that each of the 15 members of UW’s current class of 2021 recruits signed their letters of intent.
According to 247Sports Composite, UW’s class is ranked as the 30th best class in the nation and the fifth best in the Pac-12, led by five-star quarterback and legacy recruit Sam Huard. Though UW probably would have preferred for a few more playmakers from its backyard, the top four players in the current class are all from Washington.
The top wide receiver in this year’s class nationally, Emeka Egbuka of Steilacoom High School, was not selected by the Huskies to Ohio State last Friday. Tacoma native Julien Simon, a four-star outside linebacker, was lost by UW to USC earlier this year. The Huskies still have work to do in their home state, as defensive lineman J.T. Tuimoloau, a consensus top-10 prospect, is still uncommitted.
“The players who sign here at the University of Washington are the only people we can worry about,” stated Lake. “We will only continue to develop these guys,” We will persist in producing the highest number of NFL draft selections compared to other Pac-12 teams. Additionally, we will persist in pursuing North division and Pac-12 titles, as well as participating in and winning bowl games. The individuals who wish to participate in this program excite us.
Despite the fact that Lake stated this class could expand by the April final signing day deadline
Nevertheless, Huard, the son of former UW quarterback Damon Huard and rated as the top pro passing prospect in the country by 247Sports Composite, helped Washington sign a number of significant in-state players.
He will be joined by Jabez Tinae, a four-star receiver who is rated as the 47th best at his position in the nation, who is his pass-catching partner at Kennedy Catholic. Along with additional offensive reinforcements in the form of O’Dea’s four-star lineman Owen Prentice and Bethel’s four-star linebacker Will Latu, Washington also gained some athleticism on the defensive end of the ball.
Four of the top eight players in the state of Washington are represented by those four players: Huard, Tinae, Prentice, and Latu. The remainder are either uncommitted or have other commitments.
Three-star defensive lineman Siaosi Finau of Renton and tight end Caden Jumper of Eatonville round out the Washington state signee class.
According to 247Sports Composite, the other nine recruits for the Huskies are all three-star prospects and are from the following states: California, Texas, Hawaii, Utah, Kansas, and Germany.
Three other prospects, including edge rusher Maurice Heims from Hamburg, Germany, and interior linemen Kuao Peihopa from Honolulu, Hawaii, and Voi Tunuufi from Salt Lake City, Utah, will join Finau on the defensive line. Despite having only played varsity football for one season at Santa Margarita Catholic in California, Heims’ six feet, five inches, and 235 pounds have the UW coaching staff very optimistic about his future.
The Huskies received three commitments from California behind the linemen in the secondary: safety Vincent Nunley, corners Zakhari Spears and Dyson McCutcheon. Aside from Huard, who committed to UW under head coach Chris Petersen, Spears was Lake’s first commitment back in January.
Robert Wyrsch, an offensive lineman from Soquel, California, tailback Caleb Berry from Lufkin, Texas, and JUCO tight end Quentin Moore from Independence, Kansas, round out the offensive class.
After attending Independence Community College, Moore should make an immediate impact for UW after emerging as one of the best JUCO tight ends this recruiting cycle. Moore chose the JUCO path after graduating from the nearby Inglemoor High School.
The new COVID-19 eligibility requirements for the upcoming season are the reason for UW’s comparatively small class. There aren’t as many scholarships available as in previous years, with only 11 scholarship seniors remaining on the roster and only a small number having chosen to leave. However, every senior is free to return the following season if they so choose.
There are a few gaps in this class, specifically no special teams players, only one linebacker, and one wide receiver, but according to Lake, Washington might be able to sign a few more players.
Tuimoloau, the top recruit from Washington state and the third-ranked player in the country according to 247Sports Composite, would undoubtedly be a welcome addition.
Sophomore quarterback Jacob Sirmon has returned to the transfer portal after using it to test the waters prior to the 2019 campaign.
According to Lake, “the portal is a big thing for that position.” “He made the decision to try to go play and start for another football team; we have a talented quarterback room.” Jacob Sirmon has our support and we think he handled it well. We wish him the best.
Former Bothell High School four-star recruit Sirmon lost the quarterback competition this fall to redshirt freshman Dylan Morris, despite having been Jacob Eason’s primary backup the previous season.
