The defense, already thin, is in desperate need of help after J.J. Watt retired and Allen defected. It fits in nicely with the guy who will be available at No. 3 (Will Anderson, or possibly Jalen Carter), but much more work needs to be done.

Although the Cardinals reportedly brought back tackle Kelvin Beachum, who should be announced on Tuesday, the first day was quiet; nonetheless, there are still holes to be filled.

Broncos DL Zach Allen makes many well-known name comparisons. It’s time for him to start his own venture now.

After spending six months with the Broncos, Zach Allen, a defensive lineman, has been primarily characterized by his teammates and coaches in relation to others.

He basically takes Dre’Mont Jones’ place on Denver’s roster. The two most skilled defensive linemen available this spring as free agents were these two. They agreed to equally lucrative three-year contracts and are of comparable sizes.

In March of last year, Sean Payton, the newly appointed coach of the Broncos, compared Jones’ hiring in February and his involvement in the decision to re-sign him to being “a week before prom and you’re trying to figure out if Sally Sue is going to go with you and if not, you have to have (a plan).”

Rather, the Broncos chose a rookie who, because of his four years in the desert with current Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, is actually more familiar to the new coaching staff.

Joseph recently said, “Zach’s the right kind of dude as far as a person and as a teammate.” He’s a fantastic teammate who shows up every day. He’s very intelligent. He was a wise addition to this football group.

He has undoubtedly benefited from spending the last two or three years with Watt. He is a skilled athlete.

Naturally, “Watt” refers to recently retired star defensive end J.J. Watt, who played next to Allen in Arizona for the last two seasons after creating a Hall of Fame career spanning ten

In Denver, Allen is sporting Watt’s former phone number, 99. As he repeatedly demonstrated during training camp, Watt can almost be seen grinning from a cabin or European football field as he swats a ball down at the line of scrimmage. Watt has 70 career touchdown passes.

Granted, Allen is not Watt. Over his first four years in the NFL, Watt had two seasons with 20.5 sacks. But in their time together as teammates, he claims to have learned a lot.

Payton described him as “smart, in the right gap, and consistent.” “We had a player in New Orleans named Trey Hendrickson who was just a handful. I’m not comparing him to this player because they play different positions. With every flick, effort, and energy. Zach is that kind of person, inside and out.
