Football at UNC Tar Heels: Ineligible, Suspended Players Destroy Team
Head coach Butch Davis can now finally see how the ongoing investigations are affecting the UNC Tar Heels football squad.Fourteen players are still unaccounted for, and one more has been suspended indefinitely, while the media looked for players and reported their findings.
Davis had not intended for this to be the year. When ABC scheduled this game, it was not expecting UNC to drop to unranked status following a crushing defeat to LSU in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game. With the players who are no longer able to play, UNC and ABC can suffer serious losses by the end of the first quarter of the match.
“There is no single game more important than the character and integrity of this University,” Davis repeated, keeping his composure.
From Dick Baddour’s prepared statement, the following was reported:
“It is with great disappointment that we have learned that several of our student-athletes will not be allowed to participate in Saturday’s game due to their behavior.It is crucial to emphasize once more that people shouldn’t assume that any one student-athlete is involved in these issues to the extent that they are.
We continue to collaborate with the NCAA staff to find solutions for these eligibility problems. The NCAA is considering each of their circumstances separately. We are collaborating to ascertain their status through an equitable and comprehensive procedure as we can.”

This depressing state of affairs is now entrenched. The following players don’t appear to have traveled with the team: defensive end Michael McAdoo, defensive end Robert Quinn, wide receiver Greg Little, defensive tackle Marvin Austin, cornerbacks Charles Brown, Kendric Burney, and Shaun Draughn and Ryan Houston, defensive end Linwan Euwell, and safeties Brian Gupton, Da’Norris Searcy, and Jonathan Smith.
Every LSU supporter will smile just by looking at this list, while every UNC supporter will shiver. Although many were already aware, the addition of Shaun Draughn and Ryan Houston, who was enjoying a fantastic preseason, means that the LSU defense will be able to focus on quarterback TJ Yates, which will make it extremely tough for the offense to move the ball. And this might completely derail Yates’ carefully thought-out intentions to have a stronger front line.
