Cowboys player Luciano Leilua is reportedly shopping around for a four-year contract that would pay an incredible $900,000 a season to rival NRL teams.

Leilua and the Dragons have discussed Leilua’s possible return to their team; the Raiders are also considering it, but they are hesitant to pay the backrower’s asking price.

Leilua, 27, met with Dragons coach Shane Flanagan this week and asked to be released from his contract, which is set to expire at the end of 2025, immediately.

Although this is the Red V’s second attempt at Leilua in as many months, Canberra is “monitoring” the issue and North Queensland is willing to let him leave because of their strict pay cap.

Journalist Brent Read stated on Triple M that “they actually reached out for Luciano last year, they went through the front door and said we’re keen on speaking to Luciano you should consider letting him go.”However, the Cowboys declined at the time since Toddy Payten was a major admirer of his. Right now, the cap is really tight; they need to upgrade Rueben Cotter and Helium Luki, so something had to give. In the end, Luciano will give up his spot so they can retain those men.

“I believe they will target David Fifita if they are willing to spend that much money because his contract gives him till Round 10 to be selected. However, they are undoubtedly keeping an eye on Luciano’s circumstances.

Wendell Sailor, a legend in the NRL, said he was happy to see Leilua back at the Red V.

Sailor stated, “I’d like to see him take a little less and go back to the Dragons because he could do anything in the game in the next three or four years.”

“He’s a fantastic talent, but he’s not quite at the top yet.”

Before playing for the Tigers and, most recently, the Cowboys, Leilua made her Dragons debut in 2016 and participated in 43 games for the team.

Journalist Michelle Bishop stated on SEN, “I understand that Leilua is hoping to get a four-year deal from the Red V.”

He is still in Sydney and had a meeting with Dragons coach Shane Flanagan on Tuesday.

“On Wednesday, Leilua will meet at the club with the CEO of the Dragons and a few other key figures. He desires to return home. There, in Townsville, he’s not exactly having a good time.

“When you consider the wider situation, the Cowboys stand to gain as they have two promising young players in Heilum Luki and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki.

The Cowboys are developing a number of excellent young backrow players.

It will be necessary for the Dragons to cut loose one member from their present roster.

“Corey Allen’s name keeps coming up, and it’s clear that this is related to his ACL problem. Since he will be away for six to nine months, the Dragons might as well pay him.
