Former Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs rugby league cult hero Geoff ‘wildman’ Robinson dies aged 45

Following the passing of Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs cult icon Geoff Robinson, one of rugby league’s hardest players ever, condolences are being expressed.

Robinson fought tongue and throat cancer for many years, and it is believed that a heart attack claimed his life.
The 66-year-old former forward was a favorite among the fans.

“This is indeed a very sad day. Not only for the Canterbury Bankstown Club and its supporters, but also for his friends and family, the larger rugby league community, and the community at large, a fan said on social media.

“He was a legend of rugby league in the late 1970s and early 1980s, even though he wasn’t a well-known player.”
Robbo was up there with the toughest players during what was regarded as one of the game’s hardest periods. He was one of my favorites as a child who breathed and lived everything Canterbury Bankstown.

Too frequently, when playing backyard football with friends and trying to imitate your idols, I would choose to play as the Wildman and try to smash through the line. But with my physique more akin to a Steve Mortimer’s, it was all in vain. And so, I imagine, it was for a lot of guys, both backyard fighters and elite athletes, and everyone in between.

He was undoubtedly a unique breed that will never be forgotten. ROBBO & BULLDOGS FOREVER.

Between 1977 and 1984, until he briefly returned in 1986, Robinson’s signature shoulder-length black hair would fly as he drove into defenders and produced clutch tackles for the Bulldogs.

The spectators used to sing his name throughout games because of his courage.

One fan remembered: “My favorite Bulldog of all time! It was something else to watch him perform, and he never let the audience down when they chanted, “Robbo, Robbo!”

Robinson was a proud family man and a loving husband.

At the age of 18, he tied the knot with Janine.

Janine, his seven children—Hayden, Travis, Jayde, Nadine, Simone, and Joel—as well as their grandkids, survive him.
