Michigan Wolverine Announced A Return Of A Star From A Long Injury….

Will JJ McCarthy rebound from injury? Ex-Michigan star joins nine first-round QBs with zero starts as rookies

Minnesota Vikings rookie and former Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus and will miss the entire 2024 NFL season, the team announced Wednesday. The No. 1o pick in the 2024 NFL Draft will become the 10th first-round quarterback since 2000 to wrap his rookie season without a start. CBS Sports’ research team helped us identify the rest.

McCarthy joins a list featuring some of the greatest passers in the history of the NFL and some of the game’s biggest busts. Many remember former No. 1 overall pick Carson Palmer sat his entire rookie season behind Jon Kitna. Even more recall the tension between Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre as the future four-time MVP spent three whole seasons on the Green Bay Packers bench.

McCarthy will join Palmer and Rodgers’ understudy — Jordan Love — as one of four first-round quarterbacks with zero pass attempts as a rookie. Rodgers, Philip Rivers and Chad Pennington are the only first-round signal-callers since the turn of the century with zero starts in their first two seasons.

Here are the 10 first-round quarterbacks with zero starts as rookies since 2000:

McCarthy underwent surgery on a torn meniscus and will miss the entire 2024 NFL season, the team announced Wednesday. The former Wolverine tossed two touchdown passes in his preseason debut before missing practice this week with knee soreness. He’s the eighth quarterback selected in the first round of the common draft era (since 1967) to miss his entire rookie season and the first to miss it because of injury.

McCarthy contributed to three Big Ten championship-winning teams with the Wolverines, including back-to-back titles as the starter in 2022 and 2023. He helped guide Michigan to the top of the college football world as a junior, leading Michigan to a 15-0 record, a Rose Bowl win and the College Football Playoff National Championship.
