The Chiefs did not give up a touchdown in the first quarter between Week Two and Week Seven. However, in five of their last six games, they have now given up a first-quarter touchdown to the opposition’s offense.
Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator for the Chiefs, stated, “We went from one extreme to the other.”
The Chiefs had to rely more on their defense in this game because their offense was missing left tackle Donovan Smith (neck) and top running back Isiah Pacheco (shoulder).
With the help of star linebacker Nick Bolton’s comeback from a wrist injury, the defense performed admirably, allowing Bills quarterback Josh Allen to only throw for 233 yards and one touchdown.
Additionally, the Chiefs defense gave up no points when the Bills took advantage of good field position twice—on their own 47-yard line in the first quarter and on the Chiefs’ 48-yard line late in the third quarter.
Bolton remarked, “We came out early and just didn’t execute the gameplan the way we wanted to.” “They made a few really good passes.”
Luckily for Kansas City, the Chiefs defense stiffened and the Bills, who needed a win badly to remain in the playoff picture, mysteriously stopped throwing the ball to Cook.
However, another unflattering trend soon emerged.
This season, the Chiefs have fallen behind five times in the last quarter and have lost all of those games.
And that’s with Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback that practically everyone would select in that circumstance right now.
This player won MVP awards following Super Bowl LIV and LVII because he scored comebacks in the fourth quarter of both of his victories.
This contributes to the fact that, prior to Shohei Ohtani’s recent 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he had the most lucrative contact in the four major sports.
Late in this game, Mahomes and the Chiefs had an opportunity to turn the tables on their 2023 luck.
However, with 1:25 remaining in the game, officials called Toney offside, negating a 25-yard completion to Travis Kelce and Kelce’s lateral to Toney for a 24-yard touchdown.
Both Mahomes and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid mentioned that when receivers are offside, officials usually issue a warning.
The usually composed Mahomes then threw his helmet in disgust after three straight incompletions that ended the game.
“You want to see the guys on the field decide the game, to take away greatness like that,” he stated.
The fact that the call was made a week after officials failed to raise a flag in response to Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s blatant pass-interference penalty is what really set Mahomes off.
“We’re talking about the referees again in this game,” he remarked. “We don’t want that for the NFL.”
However, had the defense played better in the opening minutes of the game, the Chiefs would not have needed a last-minute drive and would not have had to rely on the referee to call a foul or return a flag to their pocket.
