Duce Chestnut, a cornerback for LSU, declared on Tuesday night that he had formally registered on the NCAA transfer portal.
One of the four cornerbacks who transferred to LSU prior to the 2023 season was Chestnut, a junior defensive back who began his career at Syracuse. However, he spent more than half of the season away from the Tigers, along with Denver Harris, a transfer from Texas A&M.
He is now the second defensive back from LSU to sign up for the portal this offseason. Laterrance Welch, a sophomore, was the first.
On December 15, Sage Ryan, the converted safety who started nine games in 2023, declared his intention to transfer. However, after working with Brian Kelly and his staff to persuade him not to transfer, he changed his mind a few days later and chose to remain at LSU.
Chestnut played in just four games overall, his last coming on September 23 against Arkansas.
The loss of Chestnut and Harris meant that the LSU defense would have to start with a rotating group of freshmen and sophomores at cornerback, particularly after Southeastern transfer Zy Alexander was hurt during the Tigers’ victory over Army.
In the end, Ryan took one position. For the strapped Tigers, however, rookies Ashton Stamps, Javien Toviano, and Jeremiah Hughes saw a lot of playing time.
Only one defensive player, Jardin Gilbert, a former four-star safety recruit from University High and Texas A&M, has been recruited by LSU through the transfer portal thus far.

Gamers have the option to stay at the school they were thinking about leaving and withdraw from the transfer portal. After a year in Baton Rouge, LSU cornerback Duke Chestnut announced on Tuesday night that he would be using the transfer portal.
Chestnut, a transfer from Syracuse, was one of the four cornerbacks the Tigers acquired in the offseason, but he didn’t play much time in the starting lineup.
Playing in the first four games, Chestnut finished tied for first place on the team with six tackles, one of which was for a loss, and one interception. Chestnut recorded 81 snaps for Pro Football Focus, ranking 37th out of 40 defenders with an overall grade of 57.6 that included grades of 57.5 for coverage and 51.4 for tackling.
For the duration of the thirty-day current transfer window, players need only visit the portal. During that time, they are not required to find a new place to live on a set schedule. The start of classes at their new residence is the only deadline they need to be concerned about.
Since all paperwork is processed through the school’s compliance office, players can access the portal without notifying the coaches. According to NCAA regulations, it may take up to 48 hours for names to appear in the portal before college coaches can get in touch with you.
