Todd Bowles, the defensive coordinator, will take over as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting with the upcoming season after Bruce Arians abruptly decided to retire.

Less than a year after leading the Bucs to victory in the Super Bowl at home, Arians, now 69, announced his retirement to take a position as a senior football consultant in the front office.

In his three seasons, Arians amassed a 31–18 record, won the Super Bowl following the 2020 campaign, and was eventually eliminated in the NFC divisional playoffs by the Los Angeles Rams, the eventual champions.

With Bowles’ appointment, the NFL now has six minority head coaches, including Mike Tomlin of Pittsburgh, Ron Rivera of Washington, Robert Saleh of the New York Jets, Lovie Smith of Houston, and
