Following an unsatisfactory Early Signing Period debut, Florida State desperately needed some positive news. It’s critical for the coaching staff to hold onto its young players and bolster certain areas of the roster via the transfer portal with one game left before the offseason.
A top priority for the Seminoles is to retain their finest players in garnet and gold. FSU NIL Collective, The Battle’s End, revealed on Thursday afternoon that redshirt sophomore safety Shyheim Brown will be coming back to Tallahassee in 2024. His breakthrough campaign following his full-time starting role comes to an end.
A career-high 46 tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, three pass deflections, one fumble recovery, and one interception were recorded by Brown, who started all 13 games. He was the most steady face in the lineup and a huge asset to the Seminoles. Brown played 677 snaps, which was a team high.
After joining the program as an unheralded prospect in the 2021 class, the native of Florida has grown into a rising star with the Seminoles. Though he didn’t establish himself as a regular in the rotation until the previous season, Brown made an immediate impression during his first year with the program. That paid off as he stopped the extra point that would have tied the game and given FSU the victory over LSU in New Orleans.
In 29 games, 15 of which he started, Brown played for Florida State for three years. He finished with 85 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, five pass deflections, two fumble recoveries, and one interception. After the 2023 season, he was selected to the Third Team All-ACC and won the Monk Bonasorte Award, which goes to the defensive player with the greatest heart.
According to projections, Brown will be among the team’s best players overall the following season. Along with young safety room members and promising true freshman Conrad Hussey, his presence in the defensive backfield will be critical.
