Resigning from Eels until the end of 2025, Gutherson
Clint Gutherson’s commitment to Parramatta through the end of 2025 gave them a greater chance of retaining the core of their team.
Star players Reed Mahoney and Junior Paulo are in negotiations with the Eels about their contracts, and playmaker Dylan Brown has a 2023 option. But none of the talks were more delicate than the ones involving their fullback and skipper.
After first only making a two-year extension offer to Gutherson, the blue and golds gave in and gave him the third season he was hoping for. After the club missed out on signing Marata Niukore and Isaiah Papali’i, who will join the Warriors and Wests Tigers, respectively, at the end of the 2023 season, they have now agreed to the terms, which is much-needed good news.
Brown is probably going to stay put, but Mahoney and Paulo’s retention is still up for grabs. Canterbury has made no secret of their desire to sign Mahoney, who was spotted this month dining with Bulldogs executives. The Dolphins, who are vying for Melbourne Rake’s signature, could also be interested in the hooker.
There won’t be a lack of suitors for Paulo, including the new Queensland team.
Nonetheless, the addition of Gutherson should increase the likelihood that Parramatta’s other free agents will sign deals. By locking down its star players, the Eels are attempting to prolong what looks to be a premiership window.

One of Parramatta’s most reliable players, Gutherson recovered from a string of knee injuries early in his career. Although he averaged 170 run metres and contributed 20 try assists in the previous season, the club also valued his off-field contributions, as evidenced by his most recent contract.
The 27-year-old sets the bar high in the gym, so Eels executives were eager to have him assist in developing the next wave of talent. Jock Brazel, Larry Muagututia, Will Penisini, Sean Russell, and Blaize Talagi are the five gifted juniors who were selected for an Emerging Blues camp. They view Gutherson as a senior member who can ease their transition into being first graders for a long time.
