Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr announce he’s retirement..
Warriors HC Steve Kerr is anticipated to step down as Team USA’s coach after the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Steve Kerr is one of the most successful players, coaches, and executives in NBA history. As a player and coach, he has nine NBA Championships in total. From 2007 to 2010, he was the front office executive that guided the Phoenix Suns to three straight winning seasons.
Due to his dedication to excellence, Kerr has gained enough national acclaim to be appointed head coach of Team USA’s Olympic basketball squad. It has been disclosed, nevertheless, that Kerr plans to step down from his role as Team USA’s coach after the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
After serving as Gregg Popovich’s assistant for a number of years, Kerr was officially named the head coach of the USA National Team in 2021. Kerr participated in Team USA’s gold medal winning performance in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In addition, Kerr played for the United States of America, winning gold in the 1986 FIBA World Cup. As stated on the USA Basketball website, Kerr became the first coach of the National Team to win a gold medal while competing.
The Golden State Warriors have experienced one of the most remarkable runs in NBA history while Kerr has been their coach. Kerr joined the ranks of NBA greats like Phil Jackson and John Kundla as the only coach in history to win three titles in his first four seasons as head coach. In addition, the 2015–16 season saw the Warriors set an all-time record for wins in a single season with 73.
Kerr’s influence on USA basketball will extend beyond the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, despite the fact that this will be his last season with Team USA. He will also continue to be felt in the NBA as the Warriors attempt to win a fifth championship in ten years.
After the Olympics in Paris, Steve Kerr of the Warriors plans to leave his position as coach of Team USA.If some of the more seasoned American men’s basketball stars view the Olympics in Paris as their “final dance,” then the same can be said for the team’s coach.
Steve Kerr, the coach of the Golden State Warriors, announced to The Athletic that he would step down from his position as USA Basketball’s coach after this summer. Popovich was the coach of the Americans at both the World Cup and the Olympics before he did the same.
When asked if he would coach Team USA after the Paris Games, Kerr responded simply, “No.” It seems like a two-year cycle to me. My father coached the Olympics and the World Cup; now it’s my turn to take over. I believe that’s about how things ought to be. It’s also a major commitment, to be honest. The last time around, with Coach K (Mike Krzyzewski) and Jerry (Colangelo), they were really establishing this culture and this system where guys had to commit for a couple of years, so I suppose that was different. It was logical for Coach K to continue. However, I believe that at this point, one cycle is enough to move on.
Kerr, 58, who also is in the last year of his contract with the Warriors, played for the 1986 USA team that won a world championship (precursor to the FIBA World Cup). He assisted Popovich both in the 2019 World Cup in China, where the United States finished seventh, and in the 2021 Olympics, where Team USA won gold for the fourth time in a row.
Team USA is hoping Kerr takes Popovich’s route. Prior to losing three of the final four games at the World Cup in Manila and finishing fourth, the Americans won their first nine games under Kerr, their first as their head coach, including exhibitions. The Americans, along with Canada, were among the top two teams from the Americas and qualified for Paris.
Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, who participated in Popovich’s final summer with the USA program in 2021, LA Clippers coach Tyronn Lue, who joined USA last summer, and Gonzaga coach Mark Few are currently on Kerr’s USA bench. After the 2024 Olympics, international basketball will resume with the 2027 World Cup in Qatar and the Olympics in Los Angeles the following summer.
