Montague Hardesty, the coach of South Carolina’s running backs, has been fired, The Post and Courier was informed on Wednesday by people with knowledge of the matter. The decision was expected because the Gamecocks’ rushing offense has placed last in the SEC the last three seasons—11th, 12th, and last.
A buyout of $400,000 is due to Hardesty. In January 2023, he received an extension through the 2024 season.
Beamer has never let go of an assistant before. During the previous three years, there have been other coach departures as well. For example, former offensive line coach Greg Adkins left to take a position as an analyst because of a health issue.
Despite being the bottom of the league this season by almost 10 yards per game (85.08), star running back Mario Anderson frequently complimented Hardesty for turning him into an SEC back. Anderson, a transfer from Division II Newberry to Columbia, replaced Dakereon Joyner, a multipurpose player, as the team’s starting back after a disastrous experiment.
Despite his best efforts, Joyner was not a running back. MarShawn Lloyd, the top rusher from 2022, and Jaheim Bell, the tight end, were lost to the transfer portal by the Gamecocks.
This year, Anderson also made a trip to Memphis, but the Gamecocks loaded up with three transfer running backs. They will pick up knowledge from a new role coach.
This year was Beamer’s first losing season. On national signing day, he stated that he would not hesitate to make difficult hiring decisions if it meant the Gamecocks would benefit more.
