Mike Krukow: “I’ll quit the show” if the San Francisco Giants don’t sign a star player this offseason.
In Shohei Ohtani or another player, Krukow is sure the Giants will create a stir.
The San Francisco Giants are expected to make a major splash this summer, and the anticipation is growing.
Giants color analyst Mike Krukow reiterated his forecast that the team will make a significant addition this winter, following remarks made by new manager Bob Melvin a few days prior that the Giants are “players at the top of the market” and that San Francisco is a “star-power town.”
“They really weren’t a team that could go out and support a super-duper star in the last two years,” Krukow remarked on KNBR on Thursday. “They are now. Additionally, I believe they will receive one this year.
The exact definition of a “super-duper star” is debatable.
It goes without saying that the Giants need a middle-of-the-order bat to improve their offense, which finished the 2023 season ranked second-to-last in the National League with only 4.2 runs scored per game.
President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi “realizes there probably needs to be some stability in the middle of the order here,” Melvin stated during his opening press conference.
Juan Soto is a generational batsman who was traded from San Diego to the Bronx as part of a seven-player transaction, and he recently joined the New York Yankees.

Ohtani should bring in about $500 million, according to MLB.com. He is anticipated to decide as a free agent by Sunday.
The next greatest hitter available behind him is Cody Bellinger, who is projected to make over $200 million even though he had a three-year slump from 2020 to 2022 during which he only hit.203 with a.648 OPS. I’ll eat my words if this doesn’t happen this offseason and they don’t gain some traction heading into spring training. I’ll end the program. If you want me to leave, I will.
“But because this fan base demands it, I’ll stake my reputation on what they do, bring in some people, and start building.” And at last, you have a minor league system that can facilitate recruiting new players.
There is a great deal more star power available in the pitching department.
Ohtani will miss the entire 2019 season while recovering from elbow surgery, but a number of elite players are still available via free agency, including Josh Hader, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, Shota Imanaga, Lucas Giolito, and Marcus Stroman.
Krukow hasn’t been afraid to voice his opinion that the Giants are ready to make a major move. Before the team crosses the barrier, they still have roughly $70 million in tax room, so Krukow thinks there’s motivation to make a significant push this winter.
Last week, Krukow had already predicted on KNBR that the Giants would be “serious” contenders for Ohtani.
