‘Excited’ to be back in San Antonio, Dejounte Murray
When the former guard for the Spurs returns to San Antonio as a member of the Hawks, how will the hometown support greet him?
Dejounte Murray, a former guard for the San Antonio Spurs, has returned to his hometown and is thrilled to be back.
“I’m merely thrilled to be back in the city,” the guard from Atlanta remarked. “I came here many years ago as a Seattle native. a great distance away, and it will always be my home.”
In 2022, Murray was dealt by the Spurs from San Antonio to Atlanta in exchange for three first-round selections and Danilo Gallinari, as part of their plan to start the rebuilding process from scratch.
Although he will be playing against his old team for the first time tomorrow against the Spurs, San Antonio will always hold special meaning for him.

After being selected in the first round of the 2016 NBA Draft, he played with the Spurs for six seasons. From being a bench player to the starting point guard and, in 2022, an NBA All-Star, he experienced growth.
Additionally, he believes that as he moves forward, he stays in touch with his former San Antonio teammates.
With Gregg Popovich still out of the game, he continues, they will be alright as their NBA careers progress.
“At the end of the day, they’re with Gregg Popovich,” he stated. “A great guy and he’s going to continue to teach them how to play the game the right way.”
In the end, Murray thinks that despite their present rebuild, the Spurs can return to the pinnacle of the NBA.

He highlights the team’s aptitude for selecting players with character, their ability to draft effectively, and Popovich’s off-court coaching methods, which contribute to the players’ development as well-rounded individuals.
And although though Murray is currently with the Hawks, he still treasures the tight relationship he had with Popovich when he was in San Antonio.
“That relationship that we connected on and created will something that’ll last forever,” he stated. “I had no relatives in San Antonio, so there were moments when I would go cry to someone who I had lost someone to repeatedly. We had a great connection in that regard.”
Relocating to San Antonio makes him happy.
Before tomorrow’s tipoff, he’ll probably receive a heartfelt video homage and will still refer to it as “home.”
