Analysis of 2023 Husker Signees: Wide Receivers

For a number of years, Nebraska has been attempting to expand its room for wide receivers. During an interview with reporters in early January, Marcus Satterfield, the new offensive coordinator, mentioned receiving as a position that the staff needed to improve. “We’ve got some receivers, I just think we need to build some depth there and different types of receivers,” Satterfield stated. “You don’t want them all to look the same and be the same.”

For the past two head coaches, that has been a top concern. Return to position coaches Mickey Joseph, Troy Walters, Matt Lubick, or Keith Williams. The Huskers have had trouble filling the post and keeping it.

Through the transfer link, Matt Rhule’s new team members Joshua Fleeks (Baylor) and Billy Kemp IV (Virginia) added a few pieces to that room. A few guys who had previously departed the program were also welcomed back.

Zavier Betts could be this staff’s biggest recovery. Between 2020 and 2021, Betts participated in 18 games and caught 32 catches for 417 yards and a touchdown. In addition, he had three rushes for 109 yards and one touchdown.

Betts departed the program in March of last year, and in October, he was taken into custody on an Iowa misdemeanor warrant for the possession of a prohibited narcotic. It was widely believed that he had given up on football until January 3, when his name appeared on the transfer site. Betts was reaching out to a number of teams and was arranging to come to Pitt.

That’s when a former assistant coach alerted Rhule to the situation. Will, the son of Jeff Nixon, was a member of the 2020 Husker recruiting class. He thought Rhule would be interested in learning about Betts when he saw that he was eager in resuming his career.

Rhule reached out to Betts, and over the course of the following week and a half, the two had multiple conversations. The day before winter conditioning began, on January 15, Betts attended the team’s all-team meeting. It’s not apparent if Betts needs to meet any academic requirements in order to be eligible in 2023, nor is it certain that he will have to reenter the program as a walk-on at first.

With Betts, talent has never been in doubt. He has the potential to develop into one of the Big Ten’s top receivers if he is prepared to mature and seize this chance.

We also learned that Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda would be joining the show again on January 16. On October 11, Garcia-Castaneda, who joined the transfer portal from New Mexico State during the previous offseason, did so.

In the season opener, he caught four passes (seven targets) for 120 yards and a score; however, over the next three games, he only received three passes (one for zero yards). Garcia-Castaneda can use his redshirt and enter 2023 as a fifth-year junior because he only appeared in four games.

With Marcus Washington and Alante Brown, two returning veterans, at the position, coaches are looking to Kemp, Fleeks, Betts, and IGC to help stabilize things.

Apart from those well-known items, the remainder of the chamber remains a mystery. Mickey Joseph was enamored with redshirt freshman Janiran Bonner’s potential. He, along with fellow freshmen Ty Hahn, Shawn Hardy II, and Victor Jones Jr., will have a busy spring.

With so many new freshmen receivers, none of them have demonstrated much throughout their time on university, so for those players, it’s now or never. And Tommi Hill—what about her? Before switching to receiver midseason last year, he started four of the first five games at cornerback. Does he return to the corner or does he stay at receiver? Travis Fisher believed he was a talented NFL defender. How is this staff going to place him?
