Three football rookies are suspended by the South Carolina Gamecocks.Monteque Rhames II, a freshman football player from South Carolina, is being jailed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on allegations of obstructing justice and carrying a firearm on school premises.

It was revealed on Friday that coach Shane Beamer had suspended Anthony Rose, Cameron Upshaw, and Rhames. All three are freshman.

The university did not provide an explanation for the suspensions, but according to internet records, Rhames, an 18-year-old defensive end from Sumter, South Carolina, was arrested on both charges Thursday night in Columbia.

As stated in a release, “Our student-athletes know what is expected of them,” Beamer added. “They know that both the university and the football program will hold them accountable for their actions and decisions.”

In February, Rhames and Upshaw—a three-star safety from Florida—enrolled in the 14th-ranked ESPN class of 2023 recruits. Rose, a former Miami three-star prospect who plays defensive back, redshirted the 2022 season for the Gamecocks.

After falling to Notre Dame in the TaxSlayer Bowl, South Carolina concluded an impressive 8-5 campaign in its second season under head coach Brian Dowell.

On September 2, the Gamecocks will play their first game of the 2023 season against North Carolina.
