Ville Husso of the Detroit Red Wings will not play against the Oilers again because of a lower-body ailment.

Goalie Ville Husso will not be playing in Tuesday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers, the Detroit Red Wings said, citing a lower-body injury.

Husso, 29, did not come back into the game after leaving it midway through the first period due to Leon Draisaitl’s 1-0 goal forcing the Helsinki, Finland product to make an unusual stretch in an attempt to save the shot. The extent of Husso’s injuries and the length of time he will be sidelined remain unknown.

Husso left the game after 8:48, having stopped six of the seven shots he faced for a.857% save percentage. Alex Lyon took over in the crease.

Husso has struggled since joining the Red Wings, and this season has been no exception. His health issues have seen him play in just 18 games, compiling a 9-5-2 record and a.893% save percentage. Under the hood, though, his problems aren’t quite as severe because he has 2.64 goals saved over expectations.

Husso has been one of the league’s greatest goalies at stopping high-danger opportunities, despite his difficulties. His high-danger save percentage of 0.842% from 2021–2022 ranks seventh among goalies with at least 5,000 minutes played on the ice.

Husso was acquired by the Red Wings in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2022 offseason. Husso made his NHL debut in 2021 and spent two seasons with the St. Louis Blues after being selected in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Draft by the team.

Husso signed a three-year contract with the Wings in 2022 after they acquired him, with a $4.75 million cap hit. He is now in the second year of the deal.

With a 27-18-6 record, the Red Wings presently hold the final wild card place in the Eastern Conference and are sixth in the Atlantic Division.
