The reason Cowboys coach Todd Payten donned the funniest football shirt after defeating South Carolina was because he was laughing with his players and holding a very special club memory.

Nothing, or almost nothing, could have made North Queensland Cowboys coach Todd Payten happier than seeing his team defeat South Sydney, the reigning champions, on Sunday.

Following unexpected wins over the Melbourne Storm and Penrith Panthers, the Cowboys defeated the Bunnies 31-6 in Sydney to establish themselves as genuine NRL finals contenders.

Even though Payten was grinning broadly in the coach’s box following the demolition, the biggest grins were still to come.

A video of Payten entering the locker rooms following the victory has been posted by North Queensland. He is seen wearing a shirt that has hundreds of images of his own face on it.

The Cowboys Instagram page announced, “Introducing the greatest shirt of all time,” along with an emoji of a laughing face.

As soon as Valentine Holmes and Reuben Cotter, two Queensland State of Origin players, shook hands with their instructor, the players started laughing.

Many supporters were left wondering why the coach would choose to choose such a garish garment.

One fan inquired, “Are they for sale at the Leagues Club?”

Another said, “It would be better if the entire team wore that shirt.”

Another person said, “I need to know the backstory to this.”

The explanation was straightforward: the shirt’s image is actually something of an internal meme, with players and staff frequently joke-sharing the serious-looking photo of their coach in chat groups.

A Cowboys employee believed they would go one step further and have the shirt printed, which Payten gladly wore following the Souths victory.

What the coach was holding in his hand raised still additional mystery after seeing the footage.

It was conjectured by many that he had a knife in its sheath, which would have been an unusual decision.

With a home game against Wests Tigers and a bye in the upcoming two weeks, the Cowboys, who are currently positioned just outside of the NRL top eight, have a fantastic opportunity to start the season strong.

Payten, though, was suppressing any early joy.

With regard to the significant victory over the Bunnies, Cowboys coach Todd Payten stated, “Where we sat on the ladder, it just gave us no alternative.”

It’s excellent for our faith and self-assurance. We can’t win if our Origin boys don’t stand by their teammates, therefore I have to give them a big up.
