Hugh Freeze is who? A chronology of the complex coaching career of the new Auburn coach

The new coach of Auburn is Hugh Freeze.

The 53-year-old was selected on Monday to take over for the Plains, capping a four-week coaching search led by new Tigers sports director John Cohen. After serving as head coach at Ole Miss from 2012 to 2016, Freeze, who has spent the last four seasons at Liberty, is making his way back to the SEC for his second tenure in the league.

Bryan Harsin, who finished with a 9-12 record in less than two seasons at Auburn, was dismissed on Halloween. Freeze takes his place. Naturally, there are issues with hiring Freeze because of his complex past. In order to gain more insight into Freeze’s past, AL.com compiled an extensive chronology detailing the high points and low points of his career, beginning with his tenure as a Tennessee high school coach.

Freeze works as an assistant coach at Briarcrest Christian in Memphis to start his coaching career. In addition to becoming the school’s dean of students, he worked for three seasons as the defensive backs coach and offensive coordinator.

Freeze becomes Briarcrest’s new head coach. With a 94-30 record in ten seasons, Freeze claimed two state titles and six regional titles. According to a USA Today article, Freeze is accused of acting inappropriately toward female students while he was a student at Briarcrest. Freeze fiercely refutes the charges.

Freeze starts working at Ole Miss as the external affairs deputy athletic director for football. Before joining the on-field crew of Ed Orgeron, he held that position for a year.

Freeze assumes the role of recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach at Ole Miss. With Freeze in that position, the Rebels sign the No. 17 class in the country in 2007 and the No. 31 class the following year.

Following his rejection by Houston Nutt at Ole Miss, Freeze accepts his first chance to lead a college at Lambuth, an NAIA program that has since folded. In two seasons, Freeze finished 20-5, with an 11-0 regular season in 2009. Despite finishing 1-2 in the postseason, he guided Lambuth to two postseason trips. In the NAIA at the end of the 2009 season, Lambuth was ranked sixth.Freeze leaves Lambuth to become San Jose State’s offensive coordinator.

Freeze leaves San Jose State, citing a need to spend time with his family, and is recruited by Arkansas State to work as offensive coordinator under head coach Steve Roberts. In Freeze’s only season as offensive coordinator, Arkansas State broke nine program records while averaging thirty points per game.

After nine seasons as the program’s head coach, Roberts resigned, and Freeze was elevated to the position. Freeze goes on to average 32.5 points per game in 2011 while leading the Red Wolves to a 10-2 record and the Sun Belt championship.

Ole Miss names Freeze as its new head coach.
