Two of the club’s games were postponed last week due to the passing of former assistant coach Dejan Milojevic, who suffered a heart attack while at a private team meal.
For the first time since Milojevic’s death, head coach Steve Kerr took the podium to oversee media availability. During his press conference, he conveyed his sadness over Milojevic’s passing while also expressing gratitude to the NBA for their decision to change Golden State’s schedule in the wake of the beloved coach’s unexpected death.
“It’s the saddest thing I’ve ever been a part of in the NBA,” Kerr stated. “Where we lose someone so close to us and then, more importantly, seeing his family suffer.”
As the head coach of Mega Basket in Belgrade, Kerr expressed his sorrow and appreciation for Milojevic, a fixture in the European game who developed one of the league’s best talent streams. In memory of Milojevic, Kerr wore a t-shirt that said “Brate”. The term for “brother” in Serbian is “brate.”
As a member of Partizan, Milojevic won three consecutive ABA MVP awards, making him a titan in the realm of Eurobasket basketball. Milojevic, an undersized forward, was compared to Charles Barkley in his style of play. He towered above his opponents once the ball caromed off the glass.
The legacy of Milojevic, as a coach and player, permeates Serbian basketball history. It was visible during the game between Partizan and Mega Basket last Saturday. A Tifo that swayed along the concourses of Partizan’s Stark Arena commemorated Milojevic, affectionately known as “Deki,” during the game.
Kerr mentioned that he observed these ceremonies together with the Warriors. They both confirmed Milojevic’s place in the sport and provided fresh insight into the potential reach of the game.
Referring to the matchup, Kerr remarked, “We watched as a team this morning the event that they had in Serbia.” “I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed something similar to the supporters’ and organizations’ pregame devotion to Deki.
“We got a better sense of just what Deki meant to his countrymen.”
Kerr claimed that after Milojevic’s death, his squad was in terrible shape. He expressed gratitude to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for allowing the Warriors to regroup following the postponement of the Dubs’ games against Utah and Dallas the previous week.
“[The break] was necessary,” Kerr remarked. “On either Wednesday or Friday, none of us could have gone onto a court and played a game of basketball.”
For Kerr and the rest of Golden State, it’s just the start of their road to recovery, but he finds comfort in the knowledge that Deki would be encouraging them to keep going while flashing that infamous grin that could melt the toughest player’s heart.
Kerr remarked, “I could really picture Deki grinning, laughing, and saying, ‘You m— need to go win a basketball game.'”
