The truth hurts more than anything else. The New York Mets have recently given their supporters a lot of unpleasant information. You’re getting close to 40 years old, yet your body doesn’t hurt. After watching a commercial about disadvantaged pets, the tears have stopped pouring. You’re not suffering from mental fog resulting from anything other than your intense passion for baseball.

We want these issues to go away on their own, like a ding on a rental car, an ex-spouse text, and a bat in the attic. Sadly, they frequently don’t, and the more we attempt to ignore them, the worse they grow.

Over the next two weeks, your happiness will be threatened by these three hard facts facing the Mets.

1) The Mets starting rotation isn’t competitive enough to secure a title.
To make it to the postseason, the Mets have a strong enough starting rotation. Is making it to the playoffs the end result? It’s similar to dining at a restaurant solely for the atmosphere and ignoring the food.

Like every aspect of the team, the Mets starting pitchers have seen ups and downs. But considering how crucial opening pitching is, we can see how far behind other teams they are.

The Mets will need a lot of those high-leverage starts from their pitchers in order to qualify for the postseason because they don’t have a genuine ace. Sean Manaea has recently delivered a few of these. After just a few innings and a ton of walks, the following time out, the tank runs out of petrol and he is pulled.

Because playoff baseball is played in a somewhat different format, it is less important that starters pitch them fewer innings. More significant is the ease with which things can spiral out of hand when the starting pitcher lacks “it.”

The Mets starting staff has exceeded many preseason expectations in several ways. In a year that has been more mild than anything else, the Mets will need to hope that the heat turns up for their starters with only Paul Blackburn added and the iffy firepower of Christian Scott and Kodai Senga.
