The snake had become more cunning than any of the wild creatures that the Lord God had created. “Did God really say that you must not eat from any tree in the garden?” he asked the woman.

2. “We may eat from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die,'” the woman said to the serpent.

“It’s not a death sentence,” the serpent assured the woman. 5. “Because God knows that after eating it, your eyes will be opened and you will understand good and evil, just like God does.”

6 The woman grabbed some of the fruit off the tree and ate it after realizing it was tasty, attractive, and desirable for obtaining wisdom. Her spouse was present when she handed him some, and he consumed it. 7. When their eyes finally opened and they saw that they were nude, they sewn fig leaves together to create self-covering garments.

Then, while the man and his spouse were strolling around the garden in the calm of the day, they heard the Lord God’s voice, and they fled from him amid the garden’s trees. 9. However, the guy heard the Lord God ask, “Where are you?”

10 “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid,” he said in response.

“Who told you that you were naked?” he asked. Have you consumed anything from the tree I told you not to eat?

12 “The woman you brought here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it,” the guy remarked.

Thirteen “What is this you have done?” the Lord God then asked the woman.

“The serpent tricked me, and I ate,” declared the woman.
