The BBC examines the current perception of the man who captured the hearts of the country, Captain Sir Tom Moore, in light of the statutory probe being conducted into the charity he founded and his daughter’s involvement in a local development dispute.
The Covid-19 epidemic was made possible by Capt Sir Tom Moore’s exceptional efforts to raise funds for National Health Service charities. However, the foundation established in his honor by his family is no longer accepting donations.
A building that used the charity’s name when it first received planning clearance needs to be demolished since the Charity Commission initiated an investigation into the Captain Tom Foundation’s finances just over a year ago.
How did Captain Tom’s tale start, and who is he?
Capt Sir Tom was born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, in 1920. He served in India and Myanmar during World War Two, when it was known as Burma, but at the age of 99 he became an international star by walking laps around his garden.
A determined elderly man and his walking frame captured a moment, and people donated in droves. At the time, the NHS was under strain from caring for thousands of Covid-19 sufferers, and the country was under lockdown.
In the end, he raised £38 million to fund NHS Charities Together, an entity that collaborates with over 230 NHS Charities nationwide.
His work not only inspired hundreds to donate, but also encouraged a large number of people to support his cause.
A week prior to turning 100 years old, Captain Sir Tom made history by being the oldest person to reach the top of the UK singles charts with his duet of “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” which he sang with artist Michael Ball.
